Early Retirement

Early Retirement

In just a few months, Nate and I will be heading out on our adventure! I cannot believe we are this close. It seems like just yesterday we were getting back on our last road trip, trying to figure out what we were going to do in order to save up for the next one. (That was over two years ago now!) Since then, we have moved four times, Nate started his own company, Sarah has held 4 jobs (sometimes 5) and got a dog.  Phew!

After graduating college, we moved back to Maine and Nate got a “real job” as a Project Engineer at a big construction management firm in Boston.  I thought about getting a job in Social Work until we decided that we would be traveling the U.S. so I stuck with a waitressing job in order to save more money.  We completed our road trip from June- October 2009. You can read more about it here and see pictures here.

While we were on our last trip, we realized that we did not want the typical 9-5 jobs, sitting behind a desk all day.  Why waste your life indoors at the beck and call of others?  Why go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to sleep, and do it all over again the very next day? Also, as cliche as it may sound, life is too damn short.  We have heard of and known several people who have passed on too young.  We have also know of several people who have had dreams to big things with their lives once they retire only to be disappointed in the end because of life’s untimely circumstances . We never want this to happen to us.  You only have one life to live and the world is yours to explore.  There is so much out there to see! There is no reason for anyone to not live the life they truly want.

We have been planning this trip since October of 2009-  just talking and mentally planning it in the beginning.  We really started saving for the trip last January 2011 and got serious about researching and planning for it this past summer.  We call it our Early Retirement- who knows, maybe our whole life will be an “Early Retirement” 😉
